9-Sheet Experiment

“9-Sheet Experiment presents photographs in an imageless state, photos without photography as it were, or alternatively, photography without photos. Toister’s point of departure is an ethical stance against the accretion of visual images that overwhelm our consciousness throughout the day. Working with nine photographic papers designed for measuring light intensity inside a darkroom, Toister exposed them in the laboratory for varying lengths of time to varying degrees of light. They were then glued to sheets of sketching paper, which in its turn was exposed to sunlight. Thus Nine-Sheet Experiment brings together two types of light and two types of paper to reveal the materials and processes used in image creation, but without actually creating any images.”
